How this free IQ test works

The test has 25 questions of four types, mixed together. They start easy and get harder as you go:

  • Patterns (8 questions): find the shape that completes a sequence or a grid.
  • Numbers (7): number series and short maths problems.
  • Logic (5): reasoning puzzles where the answer follows from the facts you are given.
  • Words (5): analogies, odd one out, letter series, and coding and decoding.

There is no time limit. Most people finish in 15 to 25 minutes, and your result shows how long you took.

What you get, free

As soon as you answer the last question, you see:

  • your estimated IQ, with a likely range and where it sits on the bell curve
  • how many questions you got right in each of the four types
  • every question with the correct answer and a short explanation
  • a free IQ certificate with your name, ready to print or save as a PDF

None of this costs anything. The site is paid for by ads, so we never need to charge for your results.

How your IQ score is worked out

We count your correct answers and convert that number to the IQ scale. IQ scores are designed so that the average is 100, and they spread out in a bell curve where 15 points is one standard step. That design decides how common each score is:

How common each IQ range is
IQ rangeShare of people
130 and aboveabout 2%
115 to 129about 14%
85 to 114about 68%
70 to 84about 14%
Below 70about 2%

A 25-question test can’t measure to the exact point, so every result comes with a likely range of about 8 points either side.

How accurate is a free online IQ test?

Your score is an estimate. Professional IQ tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), are given one-to-one by a trained psychologist under timed, controlled conditions, and your answers are compared with a large group of people chosen to represent the population. No free online test can do that, including ones that call themselves a WAIS test.

Several things can push an online score up or down:

  • being tired, distracted or rushed
  • taking the test in a language that isn’t your first
  • having practised similar puzzles, or taking the test before

Use your result as a rough guide to your reasoning skills, not as a label.

Non-verbal questions

The pattern questions use shapes instead of words. They test abstract reasoning: spotting a rule, such as a turn, a count or a change of shading, and applying it to a new case. Puzzles like these, often called matrices, are a core part of many professional intelligence tests because they depend less on language and schooling than word questions do.

What an IQ test measures, and what it doesn’t

IQ tests measure skills like spotting patterns, reasoning with new information, holding facts in mind while you work, and mental speed. They don’t measure creativity, emotional intelligence, practical know-how, motivation or kindness, and a single score can’t tell you how successful or happy you will be.

Tips for an accurate result

  • Take the test in a quiet place, in one sitting.
  • Work things out on paper if it helps, but don’t use a calculator.
  • Don’t look up answers or ask anyone for help.
  • Count your first attempt. Retakes score higher because you have seen the questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this IQ test really free?

Yes, completely. You can take the test, see your score, read every answer and print a certificate without paying anything, and we never ask for your email. The site is paid for by ads.

Do I get my IQ test results instantly?

Yes. Your estimated IQ, your score in each type of question and the correct answers appear as soon as you finish the last question.

How long does the IQ test take?

Most people take 15 to 25 minutes. There is no time limit, and we show you how long you took.

How accurate is this online IQ test?

It gives a rough estimate. Official IQ tests are given by a psychologist and compared with a large, representative group of people. Our questions have not been tested that way, so treat your score as a guide, not an official result.

What is a good IQ score?

IQ tests are designed so that 100 is average. About two-thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and about 2% score 130 or higher.

Is this a Mensa test?

No, and we are not connected with Mensa. Mensa accepts members based on supervised tests, not online quizzes. This test can give you a feel for the kind of reasoning puzzles that IQ tests use.

Can I get an IQ certificate for free?

Yes. On your result page, choose “Get your free certificate”, type your name and print it or save it as a PDF. It shows your estimated score and is not an official qualification.

Can children take this IQ test?

The questions are written for teenagers and adults. Children can try them, but IQ scores are always compared with people of the same age, so the estimate is not meaningful for a child.

Do I need to sign up or give my email?

No. There is no account and no email. Your answers are saved without your name and deleted after 30 days.

Can I take the IQ test again?

Yes, but your second score will usually be higher because you have already seen the questions, so your first attempt is the most meaningful.
